Minimum Qualifications

  1. At least 21 years old to apply for Police Officer (or 21 years of age by first day of Academy)
  2. Take and successfully pass the Louisiana Civil Service Exam. Civil Service test scores are valid for 18 months post-test and must be valid on the day of hire.
  3. At least 18 years old to apply for Communications Officer
  4. At least 18 years old to apply for Police Records Clerk
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen
  6. Must be able to read, write, and speak English
  7. Must be registered with the Selective Service (males only}
  8. Must possess one of the following: high school diploma, high school equivalency certificate, high school transcript, affidavit from the issuing high school, associate’s or bachelor’s degree, or college transcript, any of which must indicate graduation has occurred or a degree was awarded. A certificate of completion shall not be sufficient to substitute for a diploma or equivalency certificate.
  9. At least 21 years old to apply for Police Officer
  10. At least 18 years old to apply for Communications Officer
  11. At least 18 years old to apply for Police Records Clerk

Master Disqualifications

  1. Have been convicted of, plead guilty to, or nolo contendre to any felony
  2. Have been convicted of, plead guilty to, or nolo contendre to a misdemeanor resulting from a felony case
  3. Have been convicted of, plead guilty to, or nolo contendre to and/or show a history of domestic violence. This includes a conviction of a lesser charge, which at the time of occurrence was a domestic violence crime.
  4. Used marijuana within the past two years
  5. Sold, cultivated, or produced marijuana within the past five years
  6. Sold, cultivated, produced, used, or transported any other illegal narcotic to include the transportation of marijuana, within the past 5 years
  7. Have been dishonorably discharged from any military branch
  8. Have been convicted of any civil rights violations
  9. Have been terminated or resigned from any law enforcement agency for any criminal conduct unless the charges or allegations were exonerated or cleared
  10. If you have been arrested for a felony, have not had your felony arrest expunged, unless expungements are not allowed by the state. The APO will review all misdemeanor and felony arrests
  11. Have been convicted, plead guilty to, or nolo contendre to a DWI or related charges in the last two years. A diversion or similar action is the same as a guilty plea
  12. Have been involved in more than four at-fault crashes within a two-year period
